2233 Broadhollow Rd, Farmingdale, NY 11735 (631) 694-3400
Dr. Arnold S. Lesser, VMD, Diplomate ACVS
Summary:
This is a good choice for any case where a triple pelvic osteotomy is not indicated and the patient is too large to be comfortable with a femoral head and neck excision.
Pros:
- Can be used in any patient older than 8 months of age
- Not restricted by degree of dysplasia or degenerative changes
- Prosthesis lasts life of most dogs
- 80% of cases need only one side operated on
Cons:
- Expensive implants and precise surgery necessary
- Special equipment required
- With use of bone cement, asepsis is critical
- Complications, although low incidence reported by some surgeons, can be signigicant
Recomendations:
- Good procedure for medium and large dogs with degenerative changes
- Younger dogs with less than 10% femoral head coverage
